Between Coasts Forum, 2
Sponsored by the Narrative Nonfiction Concentration at Denison University, Beck Writer’s Series, and the office of the President and Provost

This forum is the brainchild of writer Ted Genoways, who wondered aloud on Facebook last November, “Hey, what would happen if we brought together a group of committed writers who are trying to tell the story of the next four years from places that are often ignored by the coasts?”

Our goal for the weekend is to figure out how to do this work in a resolute and sustainable way and to bring like-minded folks together to tell the stories that have not been told and that will need telling in the next four years. What we also hope to achieve is a shared vision and strategy of how can we support one another and encourage new voices in a variety of mediums, including print, digital, audio, and film.

We do not wish this to be a typical “conference,” where everyone sits around listening to a select few persons. Instead what we want those short presentations to do is to spur conversation among the entire gathering, allowing folks to come and go into breakout sessions on the issues and ideas that interest them most and to not only provide a space for discussion, but a way to coordinate strategy and trade best practices. So while we will have speakers, we envision this event to be more about work and discussion, rather than sitting in an uncomfortable chair being talked at, so to speak.

A general schedule is below, but note that some things are still in the works. We are delighted to have commitments from TIME, The New Republic, Mother Jones, Bill Moyers and Company, Pacific Standard, FERN, Virginia Quarterly Review, Missouri Review, River Teeth, The Daily Yonder, among others. We still plan to keep participation small (around 50) so that it's a working environment and not just three days of patting everyone on the back (or commiserating).
